CHAPTER EIGHT

A swell of fancily plumed parrots and their handsome escorts greeted her as she slowly descended the grand hallway stairs. The men smiled at her approvingly, undressing her with their bold glances. She tried to ignore them, made her hellos to the women then sought out Patrick Stephens.

“Darling, you look wonderful!” he shouted above the din. “I’m very proud of you. Where’s your husband?”

“I have no idea. I don’t think I want to see him in this crowd. It might prove to be too much.”

“Of course, but then, too, if he’s in a public arena, he might put on airs and keep calm when you tell him your plans.”

He was much too optimistic about it. Jennifer took another deep breath; looked for a drink to steady her. Jack Leonardi was at the bar, without Kylie.

“Where’s your new lady?”

“Lady, my ass! Why didn’t you tell me she was an alcoholic?”

“She isn’t!”

“Oh, yes she is! Drinks it down like a sailor on leave. What is it they used to call her type in old movies … a lush? That’s it. That’s her all over!”

“You’re a damned jerk! If you don’t like her, fine. But to slander her this way is horrid! She was crazy to link up with a piece of shit like you!”

“Exactly!” Patrick said as he walked up. “I had you looked into, Jack, and apparently, you’re the worst kind of lobbyist creep, filtering special interests’ money through fake channels to give to politicians. Only you seem to be incapable of keeping any of that ill-gotten gain for yourself; mostly due to gambling debts.”

Jennifer gazed at Jack in awe.

“So what? I never actually said I was rich.” Jack shrugged.

“No, but you’ve been implying that you were to several young women in our crowd. Are you hoping to start a career as a gigolo, Jack?”

“No, I only wanted to marry well. What’s wrong with that?”

“Well, if I have to tell you …”

“You’d better look to your own crowd before you accuse me, Patrick, old man. Kylie came down to the Caymans for the same reason. She’s just like Gayle!”

“Kylie has plenty of her own money, I’ll have you know! But who is Gayle?” Jennifer questioned. There was that name again.

“No one important,” Patrick mumbled. “Leonardi, I expect you to leave. I won’t have you spreading ridiculous rumors about my guests!”

“I’m afraid he’s right, Patrick.”

He looked at her with hurt eyes. “You don’t mean it.”

“It’s true. Kylie came here to find a rich husband. I didn’t think she was serious about it, really. I mean, she certainly doesn’t need a wealthy man. But she’s kind of flighty, does things for a lark. She didn’t harm anyone.”

“No, of course she didn’t! She just wasted my precious time. And I let her know about it, in no uncertain terms, believe me!”

Alexander showed up; surrounded by guards and beautiful women. Eliza Barry stood off to one corner, amused by all the innuendo.

“Shut up, Jack! Jennifer, come into the den, please.”

She nodded, almost crying at the expression of anger on his face.
